How to Topdress a Lawn with CarbonizPN

Topdressing—spreading a thin, even layer of material over established turf—is one of the most effective ways to rebuild soil health without tearing up a lawn. Done with Mirimichi Green CarbonizPN® (or the granular CarbonizPN®-G), it adds biochar and mature compost right where roots need them—improving soil structure, moisture retention, and nutrient holding over time. This guide walks through when to topdress, how much to use, and how to apply it by hand or with a belt-driven spreader.
When to Topdress
Time topdressing to your grass type and growing season, so the turf is actively growing and can recover quickly:
- Cool-season turf (Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, fescue): early fall is prime—often paired with aeration and overseeding—with spring as a secondary window.
- Warm-season turf (bermuda, zoysia): late spring into early summer, once the grass is growing vigorously.
For more on timing by grass type, see Topdressing Cool-Season vs. Warm-Season Grasses with CarbonizPN. Fall topdressing also builds soil resilience ahead of winter—useful in areas prone to deicing-salt damage.
What You’ll Need
- Mirimichi Green CarbonizPN or CarbonizPN-G
- A rake or shovel (for hand spreading)
- An Ecolawn applicator or similar belt-driven topdressing machine (for larger areas)
- Measuring tape and a calculator
- Protective gloves (optional)
Step 1: Choose Your Application Rate
The recommended topdressing rate is 25–50 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Use the lower end for routine maintenance on reasonably healthy turf, and the higher end for compacted, thin, or stressed soil that needs more help. Aim for a thin layer—roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch—that settles into the canopy without smothering the grass.
Step 2: Measure and Calculate
Measure the turf area in square feet, then multiply by your chosen rate and divide by 1,000 to get the total product needed.
Example: a 5,000 sq ft lawn at 50 lb per 1,000 sq ft needs 5,000 × 50 ÷ 1,000 = 250 pounds of CarbonizPN.
Step 3: Prep the Turf
Mow the lawn and clear debris like leaves and sticks. For the best results, core aerate first—topdressing immediately after aeration works the material down into the holes and into the root zone where it does the most good. If the soil is dry, water lightly beforehand so the product bonds with the surface instead of blowing away.
Step 4: Spread It — by Hand or Machine
Hand spreading (small areas):
- Pour a manageable amount into a wheelbarrow or bucket.
- Use a shovel or rake to cast small amounts evenly across the surface, aiming for a uniform 1/8–1/4 inch layer.
- Drag a rake (or a leveling lute) across the turf to work the material into the canopy and even out the layer.
Belt-driven machine (larger areas, e.g. Ecolawn applicator):
- Fill the hopper and set the application rate per the manufacturer’s instructions, matching the rate from Step 1.
- Make parallel passes across the turf, overlapping slightly to avoid gaps or streaks.
- Make a second set of passes perpendicular to the first for even coverage.
- Finish by raking or brushing the material into the canopy.
Step 5: Water In and Care After
Water lightly after application to help the material settle into the soil. Keep the turf adequately watered over the next several days to promote absorption. Then resume normal mowing, watering, and fertilization—for recovery and establishment, CarbonizPN pairs well with Mirimichi Green Release biostimulants.
How Often to Reapply
CarbonizPN delivers long-lasting benefits because biochar is a stable, permanent soil amendment—but soils that are badly compacted or low in organic matter benefit from building up over a few seasons. A common approach is to topdress once or twice a year (aligned to the windows above) until soil structure and color improve, then maintain annually.
